Sandy Hook, NJ

Sunday, we decided to take the ferry from South Street Seaport to Sandy Hook, NJ.  As a kid, my family would come here for beach days on the weekends but i hadn’t been back for over 30 years.  What a great day trip to escape our usual urban confines!

The ferry ride over is absolutely amazing with 45 minutes of great views of the Statue of Liberty, ellis island, governors island, staten island, lower Manhattan, the Verrazano narrows bridge, all the massive importing docks and ports and so on!

Once we arrived at SH, we were able to rent bikes to cruise all around the peninsula in style! There are ruins of military bases from the turn of the century, old nike missile sites, a beautiful lighthouse, many hidden little coves, a few really clean beaches on the atlantic side, oh…and poison ivy…… There is also one of the only public clothing optional beaches. We were pretty surprised to see a group of guys who were oddly very peach playing volleyball in the distance. Imagine our surprise that not only were they peach, they were nude hahahaha.

Sitting on the beach i did two watercolor sketches and back on the other side, sitting on a lawn under a shade tree, one more of the cove.

It was such a great day trip and great fun. I highly recommend taking this simple getaway!!!
